Istikhāra is the Sunnah prayer taught by the Prophet ﷺ for seeking Allah's guidance when facing an important decision. Pray two rakʿah, recite the duʿā sincerely, and place your trust entirely in Allah's wisdom.

A simple and sincere four-step practice

Pray two rakʿah of voluntary prayer
Begin with the intention to seek Allah's guidance. These are nafl (supererogatory) units.

Recite the Istikhāra duʿā
After completing the prayer, recite the duʿā with full presence of heart.

Mention the matter you are deciding
At the place of "hādhā al-amr" (this matter) in the duʿā, bring your specific decision to mind.

Proceed and trust Allah
Act on what becomes clear or easy for you. The answer comes through circumstances, not necessarily a dream.
Istikhāra is not fortune-telling. It is a prayer of trust and submission to Allah's perfect knowledge.
